Digit-al Dozen - Negative Space Week - Day 1

Hiya guys! I'm so excited about this week because it's the one time a month that I get a little break from swatching and can do some nail art. That's right, it's time for Digit-al Dozen week! This month our theme is Negative Space and I have been looking forward to it all year. Time to let out naked nails show... unless you're like me and have stains then it's cheat time. Yup, I didn't prepare for this challenge ahead of time so I have very stained nails and also a huge patch to cover a break. Figures that'd be my luck, but nevertheless I still plan on participating this month even if it's a little on the cheap/cheater side.

For the first day of this challenge week I wanted to go with something on the simple side. I really wish I could of done this on every single one of my nails, but with the patch it was just impossible. Either way I do still love the way this turned out!

The basis of this manicure is simple: strong black lines. I know line-work is not one of my strong suits, but I've learned a few neat tricks over time to disguise my fail. One of the main things is simple: keep the lines bold. The thinner the line-work is, the more noticeable it is when it's not straight. I start off by doing the middle line right down the nail and then continue on to draw out the remaining pattern. Once everything is down, I go back in with my brush and go through each one of the lines making them a bit thicker. Not only does this hide any crookedness in the line-work, but it also makes the chicness of the design prominent.

Another quick tip I've learned over the years is to use acrylic paint. It ends up working just as well as polish (if not better) and it gives you so much more control. Also if you happen to mess up badly during the mani, you can wipe off the paint with hand sanitizer instead of having to remove the whole thing.

Here's everything I used to create this look:

I did manage to create a video tutorial for you guys, but it doesn't have a voice-over. I hope you guys like it either way! I'll definitely have to come back to this design once I don't have a patch and do a full manicure with this stained glass-ish style.

Let me know what you think of this design down in the comments. I really hope you love it as much as I do! Don't forget to check out the other designs during Day 1 of The Digit-al Dozen Negative Space week!
