Book of the Month: July 2019 - The Secret By Rhonda Byrne

Hiya guys! It's been quite a while since I posted and it's been disappointing in every way possible. The beginning of this year I had a lot of plans and ambitions for relaunching this blog and my social media, but days became months in the blink of an eye. Time seemed to escape me and it wasn't even registering in my mind that time was moving. But here we are at the half a year point and I decided enough was enough. It's time to make time. For myself and the things I love doing, such as this blog. I have set-up a simple schedule for myself and you'll be seeing me return with nail art and swatches, but also with some other subject areas as well. Including some book talk! Which is what brings us to today's post and the book I have selected as 'book of the month'. At the beginning of each month I will introduce a book I would like to read and at the end of the month I'll have a discussion post on my thoughts on it. This not only gives me an incentive to read more, but will help me expand and get to know you guys more. There is an actual girl behind these nails after all, haha.

Book of the Month: June 2019 - The Secret By Rhonda Byrne

The book I have selected for the month of July is The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. I'm sure some of you guys know what this book is since it has been around for quite some time. There is also a movie that was released prior to the book I believe though I'm not too sure. It's not something I plan on looking into further until I finish the book at least. If I'm not mistaken there are more follow-ups to this book or companion books to this as well. Maybe something to explore in the future.

The Secret was suggested to me a lot over the years and I sort of just brushed it off. Self help/care was not my thing for a long long time - unfortunately. At some point in my life this book was even gifted to me and I conveniently misplaced/lost it during my move a few years ago. I'm terrible, I know. A few months ago though I saw someone on Twitter mention the book and that afternoon I happen to be at Barnes and Nobles. There it was - without even looking for it - and I couldn't help myself I bought it. Then it sat on my shelf for three months. I'm clearly a work in progress, haha.

I did start reading a bit into the book because I wanted to have some knowledge of the contents before sitting down to write this post. I'm maybe around 15 pages into it so it's not too far in at all. A quick one line summary about this book is about finding the inner power of positive thinking to change your life. Simple right?

Okay so Rose from like two years ago - heck even a few months ago - would have been like ehh not for me and closed the book on the spot. Positive thinking? Who is she? I don't know her. In all seriousness, it's really not something I tend to do or I should say it's not the way I think naturally. My go to is to always think the worst case scenarios so that the outcomes won't seem so bad in comparison. It's not a great way of going about things - I can admit that - and it caused my anxiety to worsen over time. I went from having anxiety about public speaking to being afraid to leave my house in a matter of two-three years. For days on end I would the worst thoughts about a situation only for it to be totally fine. Days of tears, worries, and other darkness for... nothing. And of course during these break down moments I would do literally nothing but cry in bed. So much time and energy wasted, I hate looking back on it now but it felt so... routine back then. And this is how I spent 90% of my life. So yeah, your girl here could use a little positive thinking to lighten up my outlook on life.

Book of the Month: June 2019 - The Secret By Rhonda Byrne

Like I said, I am a few pages in and so far I'm vibing with the concept. Even though I am far from a positive thinker (obviously) it makes sense in the way it breaks down the power behind your own thoughts. The energy you create equates to the energy you attract. Throughout this post I was trying to think of the right words and it finally clicked just now. At it's core it's breaks down to the concept of the law of attraction. You have to put out into the universe what you desire and believe in it with positive reinforcements in order to achieve. It's definitely a really interesting concept and I am looking forward to finishing the book. Moreso I'm hoping to learn from it and maybe shape the way I think into something more healthy. Even if I don't go all gun-ho with the positive thinking, just getting thru a day without the thought of impending death would be an improvement haha.

If you'd like to join in me this month in reading The Secret by Rhonda Byrne please let me know. I plan on giving you an update at the end of the month once I have finished the book, but would love to know your thoughts as well. Also please feel free to share any books you're currently reading, I have a broad range of interests so don't be afraid of sharing. Ideally I'd like to read more than one book a month, maybe around three. But you know... shoot for the moon and land amongst the stars right. I'll more than happy to just get thru this one book and cross it off my long long reading list.

Until next time, catch you later guys!

  1. Fantastic idea. I can't say I've read it, but I am sure I have heard of the title, I feel like I want to say it was on Oprah many moons ago. Definitely looking forward to your bookie blogs!
