How I Make My Matcha Latte | Matcha Monday

Hiya guys! I'm doing something a little different for you guys and sharing a recipe. No, not a cooking one. Lord knows I can't cook anything passed the microwave, haha. Instead I'm sharing the way I like to make my matcha lattes in the morning. A little random, but I thought it would be fun. Especially if you end up making it with me! I made the switch to matcha last summer when I couldn't really have coffee anymore. Unfortunately for me coffee seemed to be spiking my endometriosis pain on a daily basis and things were big bad in the pain department. But I still needed my caffeine fix, so the solution? Matcha! I was hesitant at first because I've never been a huge fan of green tea and the thought of mixing it with milk? Gag. But I gave it a try once and next thing I know I'm buying a matcha set and making it at home every day. At this point who even is coffee, like do I even know her? Okay truthfully I could never give up my love for coffee, but this has been able to cut my daily need for it. It's also so much more refreshing on a hot summer day if you ask me.

I'll admit I'm definitely one of those people who rush things in the morning and wake up with just enough time to get ready. But at the same time your girl needs a drink before the day can truly get started. No, not that kind of drink. Though tempting, haha. I make my matcha lattes at home in a really super simple and quick fashion that takes me no more than 10 minutes. No frothers or fancy methods needed here. Plus making my matcha at home not only saves me some money at the drive-thru, but also gives me a really great kick start without the crash. So let's go ahead and get started!

How I Make My Matcha Latte

1. We'll going to start off by using a matcha powder, a tea spoon, and a bowl. I personally have been using the brand Jade Leaf Matcha Tea Powder and love it so much that I haven't bothered venturing out to other brands. It's a little pricey, but I find that the small package ends up going a long way. Especially if this isn't something you'll be mixing up on a daily basis. I like using just two teaspoons (this particular one came in a matcha set I purchased on Amazon) of the matcha powder. You can definitely do 1-2 more depending on how much stronger you want the taste.

2. Add 2oz of warm water to the matcha powder. I simply use a shot glass to make sure not to water it down too much. I usually pull my water right from the fridge, so I put it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds to warm it up.

3. Time to mix it up! I'm using this traditional bamboo matcha whisk from the same set I mentioned before that I found on Amazon. You don't need to mix for a super long time, but you do want to make sure that you've done it enough to really grind all the powder away. You'll also want to mix this in a fluid 'M' motion over and over again - so up, down, up, down across the bowl.

4. You'll know when you're done mixing when the surface has a bit of a smokey form on the top.

5. Next I will add exactly one cup of coconut milk - I use Silk Non-Sweetened Coconut Milk. I personally prefer using coconut milk over almond or oat milk even though I do enough both on other occasions. The contrast in flavors blend really well and goes down super smooth in the morning. If I go for a 3rd spoonful of matcha powder then I would add an additional 1/2 cup of milk.

6. And it's time to mix again! Just don't be like me and end up spilling things outside the bowl by trying to mix it too fast, haha. But yeah there is no real method here, you just want to mix until you see it have a nice creamy look.

Optional: This step is definitely not needed whatsoever, but I wanted to mention it nonetheless. Mostly because this matcha latte can be a good way to sneak in some protein and/or collagen into your diet. I personally love adding a scoop or two of Vital Proteins Collagen powder. It's unflavored and doesn't change anything about the matcha - you won't even notice the protein powder being there! I also like adding a bit of Splenda during this step as well for a little bit of sweetness. Of course you could add whatever your sweetener of choice, but I definitely recommend sticking to something on the healthier side. The flavor of the milk and matcha really serve to mask a lot of what you could consider adding. Like I said, it's a great opportunity to add some extra nutritional value to your drink. And with the coconut milk specifically it has a sweetness to it even though it's considered 'unsweet' so you could easily skip sugar entirely.

7. And now that your matcha is all mixed up and ready to drink it's time to grab some ice! There are many different way you could drink your matcha, but for me I'm a fan of a mason jar and lots of ice. Actually the colder the better for me - well maybe not down right frozen but you get what I'm saying. I've only tried it once or twice as a hot drink and just wasn't a fan. Even in the winter time it just wasn't that appealing of a flavor for me.

And that's it! That's all you have to do for your super simple, but delicious matcha latte at home. I know there isn't anything special about this drink mix, but I still wanted to share it because it's my favorite thing to drink these days. Plus it's so convenient. Last thing I want to do in the morning is make a super complex drink and I certainly don't have time for those long drive-thru lines at Starbucks. Plus it's relatively healthy for you as well (if you don't add in a bunch of sugar that is). If you like this I'll definitely do a follow-up where we can get fancy and pull out the milk frother! Let me know if you're be trying out this drink and if you do let me know how you like it. Be a matcha lover with me guys, haha. Until next time, stay safe and I'll catch you later xoxo Moonbaes.
