Book of the Month: June 2020 - One of Us is Next by Karen M. McManus

Hiya guys! Finally after so many months I get to come back and share another Book of the Month with you. Mostly because I finally got myself together long enough to get through a book. The concept of 'focusing' feels like something I have been struggling with for the last few months and when it came to reading... well it just felt impossible. The amount of unread books I have sitting collecting dust on my bookshelf makes my heart ache. Sometime during the last month (during the time I was feeling sick) things suddenly seemed like they clicked in my head. And just like that I sat down and finished One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus in like a week. I feel like even before I finished the first book I knew I had to immediately read the sequel. In fact I finished the first book on a Friday and had ordered this one the day before and it arrived by that Monday. And that sequel is the Book of the Month: One of Us is Next by Karen M. McManus!

There are some sequels that can be read without having dipped into the first book, but that's no fun at all. So I will definitely say that this book cannot be read without having read the first book. Not only because it spoils the fun, but also because the first book is a deep integration of the sequel. That being said, do not continue reading this post if you haven't finished the first book. There will be spoilers from this point forward for the first book only, you have been warned.

One of Us is Next starts us off at 18 months I believe after the ending of the first book. However this time around we get a different set of characters as the main focus instead of the Bayview 4. One of which should be obvious as she did take part in the first book: Maeve Rojas. Actually she ended up being a key character in the first book, but more on that in a bit. I was a little bummed out about the switch in main characters, something I didn't realize was a thing until I started reading the book. I blame my oversight on the fact that I was on a reading high after finishing the first part. But in terms of the story line the change does make sense overall. All the characters from the first book were in their senior year of high school and so this time we got to see glimpses of them through the new main characters. Whether that be from job interactions, being family members, or just being neighbors. Everyone is still connected. And unfortunately for the characters that connection includes Simon and the things he set into motion.

While the main premise of the book feels like a 'who dun it', this time the book doesn't start off with a murder/death. Instead we are thrown into a game of cat and mouse in the form of truth or dare with the entire student body at Bayview High. Instead of a gossip Tumblr account we are thrown anonymous text messages where playing isn't optional. Pick truth and your deepest darkest secret is exposed for everyone to see... or in this case read in a text message. If you pick dare you'll have to do something wild. Like kissing Nate Macauley in front of his girlfriend. Or it could be worse and possibly a fatal dare. But whose behind it all? Obviously someone with a bone to pick... and maybe someone with ties to Simon? Hmm I don't know about you, but I'm definitely more than a little intrigued to discover more secrets.

I mentioned this during my book talk on the first book, but apparently the books are getting turned into a television series or a movie. Whether or not that'll be a good thing I guess depends on where it's being shown and who the actors will be. It definitely has the potential to be the next Pretty Little Liars, so whenever it does air I will be sure to watch it. Also it'll probably be the first time I have ever seen something after having read the books - usually it's the other way around. But anyway I'll be sure to post a book talk once I'm done reading the book so we can talk about it. Let me know if you will be reading this along with me. And until next time I hope you all stat safe and well xoxo Moonbaes.
