Seventeen | K-Pop Concert Nail Art

Hiya guys! This is not a dream or a drill, but I'm actually posting something nail related. I was going to say it feels like ages and then I went back and realized it has been ages. Like half a year to be exact since my last nail design. I feel the burning shame down to my soul, haha. To think there was a point in my blogging life when I was posting nail designs or swatches on a daily basis. Heck I even have a different nail shape this time around. Yup, I'm back to square nails. For now. I don't think I will keep them around too long, the maintenance on them feels so much more daunting than round nails. And I work with computers so I'm always freaking out that I will have a break when I'm taking out a hard-drive or putting in a network card. Of course I ended up actually breaking a corner last month... when I tried on and zipped up my new winter coat. Sigh. But I digress, today I have an actual nail art look to share with you and I'm so pumped about it. The nail art design is inspired by the K-Pop boy-band Seventeen! The best part (that I just realized as I'm typing) is that this is my first K-Pop inspired design featured on my blog.

This Friday I'll actually be going to see Seventeen in concert over at the Prudential Center in NJ. I'm beyond excited because this is my first time seeing them live and my first concert of the year. I'm hoping to document the experience well so it can be something I share with you guys later on this month.

Since the whole point of this design was Seventeen and their concert I wanted to take inspiration from their official light-stick. Which I totally don't have otherwise I would have posed with one, haha. But I also drew inspiration from their official colors: rose quartz and serenity (the trending pantone colors of 2015). The end result was definitely not the design I had the intention on doing when I started. I'm not going to lie... this was a very rough nail session. I ended up re-doing this entire mani (video recording and all) a total of four times. I think. I feel like my mind is blocking the experience at this point in the same way it would block out a nightmare. Not going to lie, I was about to just give up entirely. Actually I think I did give up, but then I went out to watch a movie and had some pizza. It was enough for me to say let's give it one more go.

Originally I intended to have the gradient on three of my nails and for my middle nail to have the bands diamond logo. After that was a complete failure because if freehand wasn't my strong point at my peak I don't know what made me think doing it now was a good idea. So next attempt included nail charms. Actually the next two attempts included a mixture of nail charms and opting for less gradients. Needless to say, they just didn't work out between the charms being way too big and the gradients being way too sloppy. Like I said, I ended up walking away for a few hours and it was exactly what I needed. The new attempt took inspiration from the bands 'diamond' outline of their logo. I wanted to go for a broken shard kind of look and I think it turned out well. And after switching around some polishes (which I'll mention later) I had such a better time at attempting the gradient.

Here's a breakdown of the tools and polishes I used to create this nail art look. As always please keep in mind this is just all the stuff I personally used, all of them can be easily substituted.

  • Polishes Used - Zoya: Vesper & Joey, Essie: Lapis of Luxury, Vapid Lacquer: Cryogenic Refrigerant, and China Glaze - Fairy Dust
  • Make-Up Sponge
  • Liquid Latex: It Girl Cosmetics
  • White Acrylic Paint & Thin Art Brush (I purchased both from my local Michael's Store)
  • Top Coat: Seche Vite (glossy) Poetry Cowgirl Nail Polish (matte)

Initially I thought having the official colors would help me in picking out exactly what nail polishes to use, but it was quite the opposite for me. I don't now if it was because the polishes were in my stash for a few years, but the Essie for example was so hard to work with. It was extremely sheer and made the gradient process impossible. So instead I ended up mixing it on the sponge with a similar tone (Zoya's Vesper) and it helped so much. The originally pink polish I chose (as well as the second and third) was a no-go for the same reasons. Zoya came to the rescue once again. So the lesson for this manicure? If all else fails go with a Zoya cream, haha. I think I really like this lesson.

And here's a look at the manicure with a matte finish, which I feel like I ended up loving just a bit more. I feel like I have always been a little more drawn to matte finishes. Like lipsticks for example I won't wear anything other than a matte finish. What about you guys? Team Gloss or Team Matte?

I really hope all of you like the design even though it's on the simple side (and similar to things I have done before). As I mentioned before, I had such a hard time during recording and wanted to give up so badly. Thankfully third time was the charm and I was able to accomplish a mani that I was proud to share. But I'm not going to lie, the repeated failure has taken a little bit of a toll on my heart and mind. I want to type that I'll be back with more nail art soon, but at the same time I don't want to make promises I can't keep. Not again.

Instead I think I will hold off on posting any other manis or nail swatches this month so I can focus on the ones for next month. Recording especially seems to take a toll on me so I want to have the time to focus on that aspect. I have planned out about three manicures for Valentine's Day and I'm hoping they all end up working out. Fingers crossed. But if you have any ideas for nail looks you'd like to see (not just for Valentine's Day) please let me know down in the comments.

Catch you next time xoxo Moonbaes.

  2. Great to see your beautiful nails arted up! And, all the blogging too...go you! The hardest thing is starting again sometimes. (I'm in a slump myself) Love the mix'n match in the color palette--I'm glad you confirmed it was in a Pantone pair.

    1. Thanks so much! It's definitely a little overwhelming to be back to both nails and blogging. But I am having a really good time with it so far! Next time I am going to give myself a little more time, I felt so rushed doing this mani and I'm sure that didn't help the rustiness lol.
