Moon Phases Nail Art

Hiya guys! Another week at home and I'm starting off with a bit of a surprise for you. Yes, you read the title correctly. I'm actually sharing some new nail art with you today inspired by the phases of the moon. Well the thing is it's not really new nail art at all unfortunately. I was browsing files on my computer (which is a total mess spread out among like five hard drives) and I found an old folder named 'manicures'. Low and behold I found quite the gem of a manicure in that ancient folder. The thing is I could have made this post and labeled it as new without any of you knowing that this was created three years ago. It would be technically new to you guys after all. Sigh. I couldn't get myself to do that without feeling disingenuous. And I also wouldn't be able to tell you the full story behind the nails themselves if I didn't reveal how old these actually are. Then there is also the fact that I feel like the person who created this manicure is not the person I am anymore. Truth be told I don't think I could even recreate this design. Okay maybe that's me selling myself short again. I'm honestly not sure. If nothing else right now would be the best time to try again considering the quarantine period is not over.

Before I get too far into my nail talk I want to take a second and give credit to the inspiration for this manicure. And that would be the fabulous Bana from @banicured on Instagram. My nail art pales in comparison to hers so definitely check her gram out if you don't already. She has been around for ages and was one of the first nail accounts I ever followed. Definitely brings back a lot of memories!

So yeah I hated this nail art, haha. No lie. Not kidding around. I remember so clearly and absolutely hating everything about this manicure when I created it three years ago. Looking at it now I couldn't even begin to tell you what it was I hated. That just goes to show you the state of mind I was in a few years ago. Nothing I ever did felt like it was good enough and every night resulted in a multitude of tears. At least with this manicure I went as far as to upload and edit the photos with the intention of convincing myself to upload later. Of course that never happened. But so many other manicures were simply deleted on the camera and not a single soul ever laid eyes on them. Because it didn't matter if someone else liked them, if I didn't like them then it was getting deleted. And unfortunately for me I never seemed to like anything I created, which eventually killed me desire to create.

This was part of the reason I eventually took that year and a half off from blogging. I'm glad to say that I'm much better about things now. Certainly not a perfect mindset all the time, but posting this manicure now feels like a sign of growth for me. Even if it did take some major convincing from my best friend Jasmyn. But at the end of the day I can look at this nail art now and think to myself 'these are pretty damn good' and that's a big step in the right direction.

Here's a breakdown of the tools and polishes I used to create this nail art look. As always please keep in mind this is just all the stuff I personally used, all of them can be easily substituted.

  • Polishes Used - Rica: Blackout
  • Make-Up Sponge
  • White and Black Acrylic Paint & Thin Art Brush (I purchased both from my local Michael's Store)
  • Top Coat: Seche Vite (glossy)

Looking back on this nail design so many years later I do really like it as I said before. But I will admit I did fail in one aspect... the topcoat. Or I guess the taking photos part. I didn't take nearly as many photos as I should have in the matte finish. What was I even thinking?! Ugh. I think it completely brings this manicure to life! If I had to recreate this manicure today I think I would opt only doing the matte finish.

So what do you guys think of this nail art look? Think it was worth the reveal or should I have kept it locked up in the nail fail files? No wait here's the better question, should I try and recreate it now and actually record a tutorial? Those are loaded questions my friends. I hope you like this manicure no matter it's age! Let me know all your thoughts down in the comments. I hope you all are staying safe and I'll catch you next time xoxo Moonbaes.
